Quick Guide For Interviewing Your Learning Pod Teacher

Interviewing is an important part of the hire process when choosing the teacher for your learning pod. Keep in mind to ask questions that give you both insight on teaching styles as well as a commitment to health and safety. And remember, it’s a two-way street. Always leave time for the interviewee to ask their own questions at the end. Think of the below as a “cheat sheet” for prepping your interview.

Teaching Style and Experience

Interviewer: Start by sharing a little more about your pod’s students (grades, personalities, interests) and why you’re hoping to hire a pod teacher.

  1. Can you tell me a little more about your background in education and why you started in the classroom?
  2. What types of schools have you taught at?
  3. Why do you want to be a Pod/Bubble Teacher?
  4. What can you bring to our pod that makes you unique?
  5. What past experience do you have working with X age group?
  6. What past experience do you have teaching X subject?
  7. What is one area or subject you feel you teach really well?
  8. How do you cultivate positive relationships with your students?
  9. How do you know if learning is taking place? What would you do if it isn’t?
  10. What is your classroom management philosophy?
    1. What methods do you use to maintain discipline in your classroom?
  11. What would you describe as your main strengths as a teacher?
  12. What frustrates you the most in the classroom?
  13. Describe a lesson plan that you put together and implemented recently. Was it successful and how?
  14. Tell me about a time when you had to redirect a student to be on-task. What was the challenge? Why did you think you were successful?
  15. Tell me about a time when things didn’t go your way in the classroom. What happened and what did you learn? Knowing what you know now, what would you do differently?

Health, Safety, and Environment

Interviewer: Describe the different environments that learning will take place and take this time to ask questions about how the Teacher thinks they could best utilize those spaces. 

  1. What do you anticipate might be some of the challenges of working with this space?
    1. What might be some of the opportunities?
  2. How would you design your in-home classroom to engage young students?
  3. Tell me about how you include parents and support staff in the educational process.
  4. When would you reach out to the at-home parent/guardian in a behavioral situation?
  5. How would you build or maintain a positive relationship with a frustrated or angry parent?
  6. What health and safety procedures have you adopted to keep you and your household safe during the pandemic?
    1. How closely are you adhering to social distancing measures?

Interviewer: Describe your families health and safety procedures around COVID

  1. What questions do you have about our procedures?
  2. What expectations do you have for our pod in order to abide by your personal health and safety procedures?
  3. Do you have any concerns about teaching within someone’s home?

Specific Needs

  1. What is your experience working with students who have special needs?
  2. What is your proficiency in X language?
  3. What would you do to integrate a student with learning disabilities in the pod?
  4. What’s the biggest challenge/reward in working with students who require special education?
  5. Imagine you have a student with a moderate mental disability. You notice they’re being bullied by a classmate because of their condition, but they can’t defend themselves. What do you do?

Interviewer: Be sure to leave space for any questions they might have for you.
